Rahmonov’s symbols

Rahmonov according to the amended Constitution of Tajikistan had a right to be reelected and he used that right. On 18th of November was held the inauguration of the president of Tajikistan. As Alexander says on the Russian-language Tajik blog, the inaugural ceremony was carefully prepared and it was something between a soviet-style public feast and a ceremony in oriental monarchies.

Recently the law “On symbols of the President of Republic of Tajikistan”, which was passed this year, came into effect. The president of Tajikistan for the first time acquired the presidential symbols – the Standard and the Sign (breastplate), during the ceremony of inauguration after taking his oath on the special copy of the Constitution of Tajikistan.

Presidential symbols comprise various insignia or other devices to denote a president’s position. Some symbols follow accepted constitutional or diplomatic standards: flags, sashes, entrance Marches or a medallion or necklace. The use of the symbols mostly occurs for domestic purposes.

The symbols of the president are very expensive. I am not the specialist in this sphere but all the gems and precious metals which were used in production of these symbols look very expensive. In the poor country like Tajikistan where most of the population is impoverished the authorities do not have a right to spend the public money for such luxurious things.

On the official website of the president are given the pictures and descriptions of presidential symbols.

    The Standard

The presidential standard is a flag of three horizontally placed colored stripes. The fringes of the standard are 50 mm in length, braced with golden thread. In the center of the Standard is depicted “Diravshi Koviyon”, which symbolizes durability and historical continuity of national statehood. In the upper part of “Diravshi Koviyon” is depicted a spear which symbolizes the will and power of authorities for protection of the country. The four-sided part of “Diravshi koviyon” – four parts of the world, symbolizes friendship and cooperation with other countries and people. Inside the “Diravshi Koviyon” round about the sun are placed four curling branches which symbolize the eternity of time, earth and other planets around the sun, and reflect happiness, integrity, prosperity and progress of the country. In the center of “Diravshi Koviyon” is depicted a lion with wings against the blue sky, which symbolizes the strength, power and glory of the state. Above the image of the lion are depicted the Crown and seven stars, the main parts of the State emblem.

    The Sign

The sign of the president of Tajikistan consists of three integral parts – order “Sitorai Presidenti Tojikiston” (the star of the President of Tajikistan) - first rank, winged lion and golden chain. In the middle of the Sign is placed a heptangular star, made of red ruby, which symbolizes the struggle for freedom, liberty and progress. On the sidebar of the circle is engraved the phrase “Sitorai Presidenti Tojikiston”. Inside the circle of the star is reflected the State emblem of Tajikistan. The heptangular star is adorned with 7 silver beams, which symbolize the purity of thoughts and soul. On each tip of he Star are placed square golden plates (total number – 7), and on the upper side of these plates are placed emeralds. The Golden chain is made of 13 golden rings.
