More Weddings And Less Cattle Slaughtering
Today the head of a department responsible for enforcement of the famous law “On regulation of traditions and customs” in Tajikistan, Abdunabi Kholikov reported on the outputs of the department’s activities. He reported that during the past three months there were organized 892 weddings more than in the previous quarter and the number of circumcisions was for 3 843 cases more. He believes that it is thanks to the law initiated by the president - people have stopped organizing lavish weddings and other religious ceremonies, and started saving money and other resources.
According to him, the total amount of saved resources during this period exceeded $48 million. And the deposits of the population in the banks exceed $7 million. Also, cattle slaughtering have become more rear. The number of slaughtered cattle was less in the reported period for 11 381 animals.
This is an interesting statistics. I am surprised but many people in Tajikistan (in my case it is Dushanbe) are really grateful of the President for his initiative. They believe that this law was adopted very much on time, because today people in Tajikistan have more opportunities to earn money and in most of the cases the earned money is spent for lavish events.
Everyday on TV one can see people making long speeches where they say how good is the law and finally they have a chance to save some money. I am sorry, but I do not understand this. Why people had not previously thought of savings?

Vadim, I imagine it is a cultural thing. I hope that Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan pass similar laws. For the village people, everything revolves around to’y [parties], whether it is a wedding party or a circumcision party. Russian weddings are also big events, but I think that Uzbek, Tajik, etc weddings are much more lavish. The money saved by outlawing both the large wedding and the kalim [bride price] must truly be millions of dollars.
Of course, the business side of weddings might be hurting now, but I think that they themselves, these businessmen and women, are also happy to know they can save money on their own sons and daughters.

I totally agree with you,,, it’s quite funny to hear that tajik people need a law (imposed by the state) to realize that they are spending too much on local ceremonies. But I also understand tajik poeple because the social and family pressure does not allow them to be reasonable in their spendings, there is always this judjemental opinion of others that is always waiting to juge or critisize those who do not spend enough for their son or daughter’s weddings…
