Explosion – an excuse for the government
A week after the bomb explosion in Dushanbe, no terrorist organization has claimed to be the organizer. This raises a reasonable question - was it really a terrorist act? Reuters has a good report on that. It reports that the Islamic Revival Party, allegedly the main opposition force in the country, has doubts regarding the whole situation. The members of the party claim that it gives a good ground for the government to start a big anti-Islamic campaign and as a consequence ‘a further clampdown on civil liberties.’
“I fear that after these explosions, the government will get yet another excuse to step up pressure on the media and political opponents under the guise of a fight for stability,” said Rakhmatullo Valiyev from the opposition Democratic party.
The opposition members are sure that ‘these attacks at government buildings in Dushanbe were a result of growing popular discontent.’
“People are still very poor and expect the government to do something about it,” said Shamsiddin Saidov, a senior official from the Islamic Revival party of Tajikistan. “Voices of discontent are rising across society.”
To some extent the IRP members are right that the discontent amongst the population is getting stronger day after day. However, I would not link this explosion to a general discontent in society. I would rather believe that it was part of a war between different groups of local mafia.
The grievances amongst the population with regard to economical situation takes place mostly because there is a little progress after the peace accord was signed. It is already ten years that the war officially ended but since then little has change in level of living. However instability is the last thing that people want. They still remember the war which put them back for many years in development.
