Cold weather in Dushanbe

It is freezing outside. Not compared to Russia or Kazakhstan but it is unusual for Dushanbe. The cold weather suddenly came to our parts from the north. As late as in the morning it was 3 degrees of warmth. The meteorologists say (rus) that it is the “cold northern invasion”. Several days ago it was 7 to 10 degrees warm and now it is going to be 8-10 degrees cold and it is going to snow in the night. According to the specialists the warm weather will replace the cold one in two to three days.

What they didn’t announce is the “weather” mortality rate; the number of people who die due to cold weather not in the streets, but in their homes…

Yes, Doroud, you’re right. There are many people who die of cold in their apartments. Especially the old people who have no one to take care of them. Those who don’t die, they suffer of cold-related diseases. This list of people includes not only the old but also the young people. The cold weather is still here, it is not going away despite the forecast of the meteorologists. It is still freezing. People turn on all of their heaters because they have no central heating. But it is does not help. It is almost impossible to heat an apartment with poor second rate Chinese heaters. It becomes even worse because the transformers and cables succumb the high pressure - too many heaters are turned on - and people stay for several days without electricity. Those responsible for fixing cables and transformers unhurriedly come to the site. Although they have to remove a glitch without charging residents of an apartment building, they wait until money is collected for them. This is happening in the capital of our country. It is really sad…

People in the rural areas are burning their last fuel wood resources.

What is the forecast? How long will this unusually severe winter last? Will it stll be like this come March (I’m traveling to Dushanbe in March). Will people, especially those in remote areas, stretch their meager resources until spring, whenever it comes?

We (FSD) have been clearing landmines in Tajikistan for the last four years. We are now planning in providing emergency relief to those in need (provided we find the funds to finance that!).
