To become a gas country
Tajikistan can become a gas country (rus). Not sure if it can become a gas exporting country but the resources are enough for Tajikistan to supply its own market with gas for 50 years! Currently the oil and gas giant companies are signing contracts with Tajik government on exploration of gas fields. They are sure to find gas in Tajikistan because for some reason they trust the old Soviet exploration maps which show big reserves of gas in the country.
The Russian newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta regrets that Russia had not taken active measures when it was necessary, even though President Rahmon several years ago proposed to do exploration works in Tajikistan not only for gas but some other important minerals. Russia did not take it for serious, as if it can catch up any time it wants. However, it is getting awakened after Tajikistan started signing contracts with Canadian and Chinese companies.
This situation very clearly describes Russia and its colonial behavior towards Tajikistan. When there is no interest in Tajikistan from other sides it also does not show interest even if Tajikistan really needs it, but when an interested party appears on the horizon, then it starts behaving as if no one else has a right to cooperate with Tajikistan. Russia thinks that it is always an exclusive partner for Tajikistan, as if we have no other choice.

As long as Rahmon is in power, TJK will always be Russia’s puppet!
TJK is the line where in Russia’s mind, US shouldnt cross.
Coming to to the issue of gas, if they just spend the same amount on education - paying motivated students to study in US and Europe to get at least a bachelors, we will be secure for 500 years!
But again, it’s called wishful thinking (as long as Mr.Handsome has the throne)
